Why Dental Check-ups Matter
Regular dental check-ups are the single most important thing you can do for your oral health. They allow your dentist to spot problems early — when treatment is simpler, less invasive and less expensive. Many dental conditions, including gum disease and oral cancer, develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages.
What Happens at a Check-up
Your dentist will examine your teeth for signs of decay, check your gums for disease, inspect existing fillings and dental work, screen for oral cancer, and may take X-rays to check for hidden problems. They'll discuss any findings and recommend treatment if needed.
Professional Cleaning
A professional clean (scale and polish) by a dentist or hygienist removes plaque and tartar that regular brushing can't reach. Tartar builds up over time, particularly behind the lower front teeth and along the gum line, and can only be removed professionally. Regular cleaning helps prevent gum disease, the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
How Often Should You Go?
Most dentists recommend check-ups every 6 to 12 months. The interval depends on your oral health: patients with gum disease, high decay risk or complex dental work may need more frequent visits. Your dentist will advise the right schedule for you.
